General Description

History

The Department of Biology was opened in 1975 in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. In 1982, after our faculty name changed as the Faculty of Arts and Sciences by the Law of Higher Education, it was included in the Department of Science and Literature of the Biology Department.

Specific Admission Requirements

To have high school degree, to have enough points from university entrance exam made by OSYM, to have enough points for YÖS examination for foreign students. Final registration student must register their course on the dates specified in the academic calendar.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Depending on the degrees awarded, theoretical or practical courses taken as part of a degree (completed or not completed) may lead to recognition of these as prior learning by the programme administration. The students who have taken courses in another institution in Turkey or abroad can ask for credit and grade transfer. The executive boards of relevant programme will decide on the courses to be transferred covering students' entire academic program once and for all with the condition that the request for transfer be made within the first week of the academic year, the requests cannot be repeated.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

A student is required to successfully complete the designated program of courses meet a minimum of 240 ECTS credit requirement and have a minimum GPA of 2.00/4.00

Profile of The Programme

The Department of Biology consists of General Biology, Zoology, Botany, Molecular Biology,Hyrobiology. Aiming to understand living organisms and live systems, the science of biology is divided into many sub-branches in terms of research subjects. The laboratories of the department are equipped with appropriate infrastructure and technology required for both practical applications in courses and advanced research studies. Academic staff of the department carry out projects supported by TUBITAK and TAGEM, in collaboration with students, and cooperate with national and international universities, research laboratories and centres. Graduates of the Department of Biology can work in universities. In addition, they can find job opportunities in laboratories of health institutions, private research institutes, the institutions affiliated with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Environment and in the food and pharmaceutical industry. Graduates who receive the required certificate can teach at private or public schools. The department is in cooperation with various international universities, research laboratories and centres.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

The graduates can be employed as teachers, researchers or experts in institutions that carry out basic and/or applied research in such fields as medicine, chemistry, veterinary sciences, agriculture, biotechnology, biology and education. They are also employed in drug manufacturing industry both as researchers and sales persons. They can work in hospitals or health clinics as biologists or technicians as well as in government institutions as consultants.

Access to Further Studies

May apply to master's or doctorate programmes in any field or proficiency in fine arts programmesthat have 240 ECTS credit value of all courses that are successful

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The students midterm exam, final work (laboratory work, laboratory examinations, seminars, quizzes, homework, a second mid-term exam) and are subject to the final exam. The mid-term exam and final exam is 40% of the contribution of the contribution is 60%. All exams are graded out of 100. Final exam, students are required to obtain at least 50 points. (AA), (BA), (BB), (CB) and (CC) that the students are considered successful one.

Facilities

There are 3 laboratuaries in Department of Biology. There are 15 laboratuaries for Doctorate and msc sutudents. Furthermore, for Ondokuz Mayıs University Science and Art Faculity and Department of Biology, there is a museum which name is Samsun Providence Fish Museum
