Faculty of Science and Letters - Department of Statistics

General Description

History

Ondokuz Mayıs University Science and Art Faculty, Department of Statistics has begun undergraduate education between 1982 and 1983. Approximately 215 students in the department are educated by a scientific committee which consists of 16 members such as 4 professor, 6 Assoc professor, 1 assistant professor and 5 assistants. The main objective of the department is to offer a well-balanced statistics program for prospective statisticians who may work in various fields including university teaching. The aim of the program offered by The Department of Statistics is two-fold: First is to provide its students with a firm foundation in the theory and application of the basic techniques of statistics; second is to ensure that students acquire a background knowledge in the other social sciences. The development of the student’s power of analytical reasoning is the major aim of the department.

Qualification Awarded

The students who complete all the courses in the undergraduate program successfully, receive Bachelor of Science degree and the title “Statistician”.

Level of Qualification

First Cycle

Specific Admission Requirements

High School Diploma Placement through a centralized national university placement examination

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

To complete a secondary/high school program

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The graduates of secondary/high schools join the department with the mathematical grade taken in the national university placement examination.

Profile of The Programme

Undergraduate education is given in two ways; Day time classes and Evening time classes. The undergraduate program of instruction is four years. The courses offered are divided into two semesters. Required courses are indicated in the curriculum of the faculty. During the first two semesters of the undergraduate program, the department offers a variety of general courses to prepare students for more technical and specialized work to be undertaken in the third and fourth years. The curriculum for the last two years is designed to provide the student with a more advanced knowledge of statistics as well as a training in a number of applied fields.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

The graduates can work as an experiment organizer in planning units making quantitative analysis, in insurance companies, in various sectors in industry, in quality control departments, in stage of technology improvement, in research and consultancy companies, in the sectors about agriculture and industrial design. Therefore, they can employ in many public institutes in which evaluations are made such as State Planning Organization, Ministry of Industrial and Commerce, State Institute of Statistics, Institute of Standards, Employment Agency, in banks and in individual companies.

Access to Further Studies

The graduates can apply and join the graduate program if they fulfill the necessary conditions announced by the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Students must attend classes, practices and examinations. Students’ attendance is followed by the Instructor concerned. Students’ attendance is followed by the Instructor concerned. For almost all required and technical elective courses there are written examinations, in which most cases student must solve selected problems by calculation. During each semester is given one midterm examination, final ,a make-up examination. The semester grades are determined by adding forty percent of the midterm exam and sixty percent of the final exam grade. If the final exam and the semester grades exceed 60 or be equal to 60 , the student will be successful from this course.

Graduation Requirements

The students who complete the four year undergraduate program successfully receive undergraduate diploma.
