General Description

History

Chemistry Department was established in 1975. It is consist of analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry branches. Chemistry education comprises a total of 4 years. After being junior, chemistry students have to complete their 30-working day- intership. The students who complete the whole education programme receive their Bercelor of Science in Chemistry degree and they can work as “chemist”. The mission of the Chemistry Department is to produce well trained, creative, researcher and practitioner personnel who have scientific thinking in the direction of the requirements and the development of both chemistry and industry. In addition, it is to be able to use the earned knowledge in the solutions of problems of national and regional industry organizations and to do research and publications in various fields of chemistry. The vision of the Chemistry Department is to improve organizational ties with the world of chemical science and chemical technology in national and international arena and to create a competitive environment for bringing chemistry education and research to a level equivalent to world’s qualified universities.

Qualification Awarded

The Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry( first cycle in Chemistry) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum with a title conferred "Chemist".

Specific Admission Requirements

Candidates must have a high school or equivalent degree and they must have got enough score from University Student Selection Exam.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Exemption exams for English Prep School is carried out and those who pass the exam for exemption are exempt from the corresponding course in the course program.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The students who have completed all courses successfully (for a total of 240 ECTS),and have a passing score from their internship are awarded with Bachelor Science in Chemistry.

Profile of The Programme

The department contains five divisions; analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry and biochemistry. The Chemistry education programme includes 4 years. At the end of the Chemistry Bachelor of Science programme, they are awarded as Chemist. Students who are graduated from the Chemistry Department may apply to MSc and PhD programmes in Chemistry. The Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry is awarded to students who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum, including 30 working days apprenticeship (course of instruction) period. Chemistry degree program is designed to provide the students the fundamentals of chemistry. The first year courses mainly consist of physics, general chemistry and mathematics to bring the knowledge levels of students from different background to the same level. The compulsory courses offered in further years include physical, analytical, inorganic and organic chemistry. These courses also include laboratory studies to provide technical skills necessary to enter their career as chemists. It was mainly aimed to give the students an analytical approach for solving any problem and handling complex information as well as the laboratory experience.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

Undergraduates of chemistry might join universities, research institutes or agricultural, environmental, nutritional, medical, pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies as a researcher. There are also job opportunities in the laboratories of hospitals as scientist and technicians.

Access to Further Studies

The graduates can continue their higher educations by entering master and Ph. D. programs in the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

One written midterm and one written final exam are carried out throughout one semester. Raw success score concerning a course exam, is a score obtained by adding the 40% of the average of midterm and, if any, other educational activities and the 60% of the the final exam. Raw success score must be at least 60. If the student has a raw success score is 60 or higher, then he/she is considered as succesful from that course.

Graduation Requirements

Satisfying the conditions mentioned in "Qualification Requirements and Regulations" section is enough for graduation.

Facilities

Department of Chemistry consists of 23 Professors, 1 Lecturer with Ph.D. , 1 Lecturer and 5 Teaching Assistants. The department includes highly-equipped Research and Training labs of Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, General Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Biochemistry and Instrumental Analysis. Lectures are supported by experiments conducted by the students in laboratory environment. The experiments are both for scientific studies and industrial productions. The students are provided to have a better chemistry education with technical and educational field trips and with internship.
