General Description

History

The Psychology Department of Ondokuz Mayıs University admitted students for the first time for the academic year 1992-1993. The Department of Psychology gave its final graduates in academic year 2000-2001. After the theaching and education program of the department was updated, and number of academic staffs were increased, the Department of Psychology started back again in the academic year 2007-2008.

Qualification Awarded

The Bachelor's Degree in Psychology (first cycle in Psychology) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.

The registration and admission of students are executed according to regulation of the Higher Education Council.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their educaiton to obtain Bachelor’s degrees if they are successful in the selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Ondukuz Mayıs University and hence of the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English language and the other foregin languages. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).

Profile of The Programme

The undergraduate program at the Psychology Department aims to teach theorising psychological issuess, scientific methods and practise skills in the main fields of psychology. In addition, students gain some academical and transfareble skills as coomunication and learning skills, critical thinking, problem solving abilities, developing ethical and social responsibility and working with others.
The Department of Psychology has a four-year (8 semester) undergraduate program. Although at the department has got a preparatory English language class (two academic term), it is an elective course. The departmental courses are offered in Turkish.
First two years, psychology students take mainly compulsory courses; the third and fouth years of psychology education consist some elective courses as well as compulsory courses. There are examinations for all Compulsory and elective courses. The midterm and final examinations are compacted and given in a specified week of the semester. Each semester consists of approximately fiftheen weeks.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

Psychology graduates will find vocational opportunities in various public institutions (such as the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of National Education, Social Services, etc.), private schools, Psychotechnic Evaluation Centres, Industrial establishments. They can enter the teaching profession at public or independent schools after having gained a Teaching Certificate. Furthermore, graduates may pursue an academic career by taking up scientific study at universities (at Master’s and Doctorate levels).

Access to Further Studies

The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

Facilities

The Psychology Department has a full-time staff comprised of 1 professor, 1 associate professor, 2 assistant professors, 7 research assistants and 1 lecturer. The department invites one specialist on a regular basis. The department offers internship, fieldwork, or indepentent study options for students.
