General Description

History

Departmen of History was established in 1998. İt was not accepted to department student from 1998 to 1999. History department began to accept student in 1999-2000 instruction-teaching terms

Qualification Awarded

The Bachelor's Degree in History ( first cycle in History) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum

Students must have 383.225 point at least for first education, 376.087 point et least for secondary education

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their educaiton to obtain Bachelor’s degrees if they are successful in the selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Ondokuz Mayıs University and hence of the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English and German Languages. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 144 ECTS).

Profile of The Programme

History department is carrying out an education program in order to train historians. On our course programs, along with compulsory courses, there are selective courses as well in order to give students the chance of selecting courses suitable for the fields in which he/she wants to get specialized. Besides, among our objectives is provide qualified staff for all service areas in relevant fields or communication. These are public utility, local and regional administration, personnel management, journalism, international organizations, tourism, administration and evaluation of cultural heritage, archives, museums, libraries and lateral branches of these.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

Graduates, who have pedagogic formation and obtain sufficient score in KPSS (Civil Servant Election Exam), can be assigned history teacher by the Ministry of the National Education. Besides, there are employment opportunity in public utility, local and regional administration, personnel management, journalism, international organizations, tourism, administration and evaluation of cultural heritage, archives, museums, libraries and lateral branches of these.

Access to Further Studies

The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

In history department there is one midterm exam and one final exam, total of two exams per term. Mid term exam affects final grade % 40, and final exam affect it % 60.

Facilities

In our department we presently have 3 Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 1 Assistant Professor and 7 Research Asistants. All of our classrooms currently have projectors. Also, we have a library in our department.

Programme Outcomes

  1. Purpose: purpose of historian researchs case and fact occuring during history with contemporary methot, purpose of historian can obtain methot finding out and following discrepancies of approach and information changing occuring with academic. So, historian obtains the equipment can follow closely development in self area. Historian with obtaining information and approach creates the student profile sharing.
  2. Target: Target of historian relates cause and effect among cases and historian survey historicaly problem causing a base of historical and draw conclusion historicaly, historian helps tat ıts students obtain skill employing as researchs in public and private establishment which self constantly.
  3. Historian has information and craft higly which is supported with another scientific resources, practicing equipment, books containing current informations interested in liberal education and asistatnt science to history
  4. Historian follows investigation and publication conducting in self profession
  5. Historian takes responsibility interested in informing to public opinion and creating public opinion.
  6. Historian has information to public opinion for informing as regards history backgraund of area.
  7. Graduates will be able to collect and evaluate historical data in order to contribute local and national history studies
  8. Students can be able to use modern information and communication technologies. (they can be able to use computer as required by history department)
  9. Students consider social,national and humanitarian values while sharing the knowlege they have.
  10. Students perfectly understand national and universal values, They are loyal to principles of Atatürk and they are open to new ideas.
  11. Students wil have the enough knowlege of history of humanity, basic humanitarian values and democracy.
  12. Students will be able to express an opinion about past instutions and mentality of society.

  14. Students will be able to engage in professional dissemination of their work by presenting their research at conferences.
