General Description

History

Department of Geography was established in 1999 and has started instruction for undergraduate students in 1999-2000 academic year.

Qualification Awarded

Students that successfully complete the program are awarded with a diploma of Bachelor's degree in Geography.

Specific Admission Requirements

According to Higher Education Law and Regulations which have been decided by Higher Education Council (YÖK), high school graduate students have to take a university entrance exam administered by Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) to be able to enroll in this program.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their education to obtain Bachelor’s degrees if they are successful in the selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Ondokuz Mayıs University and hence of the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organized at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language and Computer Skills. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a successful grade from these exams are held exempt from the related courses in the curriculum.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Program diploma is awarded to undergraduate students who have successfully completed all the courses (for total of 240 ECTS).

Profile of The Programme

The aim of the four-year undergraduate program is provide scientific knowledge on the discipline of geography and other related disciplines as well. The courses of the program consist of compulsory and optional courses considering the current social needs and recent progress in geography. The Department of Geography has four main sub-branches named as “Physical Geography", "Regional Geography" “Human and Economic Geography”, and "Geography of Turkey". However, students are not accepted for these branches of the department separately, they take instruction in the Department of Geography and graduate for a single diploma.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

Graduates of geography department can work as specialist of field observation, land use planning, regional planning, Geographic Information Systems, Environmental Impact Analysis, environmental science, map editing, map libraries, Remote Sensing, aerial photo interpretation, cartography, education, international relations, geopolitics, marketing analysis, recreation resources management, health protection planning, water resources management, urban planning, social expertise, soil science, transportation planning, and Earth sciences. It is possible for the graduates to become teachers in both private and public schools. At the same time, students who wish to do academic work in their industry also have opportunities to master's and doctorate. In addition, a variety of faculty, graduate students can serve as the academic staff at universities.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates, assuming that they meet required degrees in ALES exam (Academic Postgraduate Education Examination) and required foreign language knowledge, can enroll in graduate programs (master degree and doctorate).

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Examinations are made in dates, places, and times determined and announced by the University. Students have to attend the classes and exams. The attendance of the students is followed by the lecturers. 100 is the full point in the assessment of all exams, in addition to each course has a written mid-term exam (or homework assignment) and a final exam. The score of a course is calculated with the 40% of the mid-term exam grade and 60% of the final exam grade.

Graduation Requirements

Students to graduate from this program must obtain a grade point average of at least 60 out of 100 and succeed all courses in the program (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).

Facilities

The Geography Department has a sufficient number of classes for theoretical lectures, with computer, projection and similar multimedia equipment. In addition to this, there are a Geography laboratory which have a variety of materials and visuals to practice the theoretical lessons and a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) laboratory designed for students to prepare them for the use of geographical skills in computer science. The department has 11 academic and 2 administrative staff members. 4 of the academics are professor, 3 of them are assistant professor and 4 of them are research assistants.

  1. The students who graduate with a major know and use the terminology of geography.
  2. They know and apply the main research principles, data collection methods, and assessment methods of geography.
  3. They know the basic information about environmental problems and natural hazards, and methods for coping with them.
  4. They know the main information of ecosystems and their geographical distribution.
  5. They identify and explain spatial differences.
  6. They determine and explain the location of geographical space and its natural, human, and economic characteristics.
  7. They can prepare and finalize independent projects.
  8. They know the essentials of sustainable use of geographical space.
  9. They can provide collaboration and cooperation in interdisciplinary studies.
  10. They can collect, analyze, and interpret geographical data.
  11. They will know basic information about professional career, geography teaching, and postgraduate education.
  12. They know geographical regions of Turkey and their main characteristics.
  13. They can observe and understand the relation between man and space in rural and urban areas.
  14. After defining potentials and weak points of geographical space, they can relate them to sustainable development (SWOT analysis).
  15. They know and can explain geopolitical characteristics of Turkey according to main principles of geopolitics.
