General Description

History

Department of Horticulture has started graduate education and training taking firstly in 1982.

Qualification Awarded

The Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.

Specific Admission Requirements

High school diploma and to be placed through the Undergraduate Placement Exam-LYS (for more information, please visit web site of www.osym.gov.tr) are necessary for approval and registration. Within a quota, the program accepts foreign students taken the University Entrance Exam for foreign students made by Ondokuz Mayis University.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Equivalence adopted by the Council of Higher Education institutions can be admitted. High School graduates who are successful in vertical transfer exam to receive a bachelor's degree may be admitted to be able to continue their education. These students learn from vocational high school graduates by the department concerned before taking into account the lessons, and succeeded in determining the adjustment is made. An examination is being held for the level of foreign language and students may be exempted from these courses in the curriculum if they receive a passing grade.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students must take and pass all courses at 240 ECTS including graduation thesis and internshipsthat are explained by the Education and Exam Regulation of Ondokuz Mayis University.

Profile of The Programme

Program targets to educate the students and to enable them to produce solutions to the current economic problems of agricultural sector based on the knowledge, talents and competencies acquired during the program and use these solutions in their professional life and convey them to related individuals and institutions and improve themselves in line with changing conditions.To become an educational entity that will observe the scientific standards and objectivity in all activities at all times and maintain dialog continuously with the alumni and decision makers in agricultural sector to help find solutions to the important and current horticultural problems of the sector and renew itself in accordance with the requirements of changing time.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

Graduates take professional role in establishment of many public and private sector. Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Ministry of Development, National Productivity Centre, Export Development and Study Center, Undersecretariat of Treasury, Undersecretariat of Foreign Trade, Public and Private Banks, Agro-Industry Enterprises, Agricultural Cooperatives, Control and Certification Bodies, Consulting Firms in agriculture and agro-industry, appraisal firms and non-governmental organizations. Graduates also take place in national and international rural development projects that are very much promising.

Access to Further Studies

The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree and satisfactory scores about ALES or GRE, transcript and foreign languaeare eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

For each course assessment and grading is described in Syllabus in details. Grades are assessed through relative assessment system of the Education and Examination Regulation of Ondokuz Mayis University.

Graduation Requirements

Students must take and pass all necessary courses, graduation thesis and intermship listed in curriculum totaling 240 ECTS credits and reach a minimum grade point average GPA of 2.00/4.00.

Facilities

Field and modern greenhouses are establihed in the faculty and divided into as fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants growing in the field of viticulture practices and are being investigated. Department have 18 pieces of plastic and one piece glass greenhouse with heating system, two pieces of research greenhouse, a cold storage room and five seeds in a laboratory. Programme Outcomes

  1. The undergraduate programme comprehends the general principles of agriculture and the subjects of production, propagation, breeding, storing and packing and marketing of horticultural crops, namely fruit crops, vegetable crops, viticulture and ornamental crops and also performs the necessary interpretations.
  2. Plans projects regarding fruit crops, vegetable crops, viticulture and ornamental plants as well as having skills of constructing and operating facilities and similar structures and identifies and creates solutions to encountered problems.
  3. Improves professional knowledge and skills perpetually for professional development and communication by utilizing informatics technologies.
  4. Conducts studies at a baseline level of Horticultural Sciences as independently or as a participant of a multidisciplinary researcher's team and endorses the results to those concerned.
  5. Affiliates with applications tending to conservation of natural resources by critical thinking of the effects of agricultural applications on the environment.
  6. Gets comprehensive knowledges regarding to the statute of Horticultural Sciences and behaves accordingly to scientific, cultural and ethical values in professional studies.
  7. Exhibits effective oral and written communication abilities.
