General Description

History

Ondokuz Mayis University, Agricultural Faculty, Department of Animal Science was founded in 1982. Students who enroll to animal science department take basic courses in first two terms. In the terms of 3-6, they take some courses from different departments of Agricultural Faculty, and some basic courses from Animal Science Department. They take advanced courses from Animal Science Department in the terms of 7 and 8. Finally, they graduate after 4 years of education. There is post-graduate education in the programs of Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences, besides undergraduate education. There are three sub departments in Animal Science Department. The education is carried out in the sub departments of Animal Breeding, Animal Nutrition and Biometry and Genetics. Education and research facilities are carried out by the poultry species of chicken, turkey, quail, partridge etc., cattle, sheep, goat and honey bee. There are laboratories and research units for carrying out the studies about animal breeding and nutrition. The students of Animal Science department have applied education in the laboratories of Reproductive Biology, Nutrition and Feed, Microbiology and Breeding. The experiments about dairy cattle, sheep, goat, honey bee and different poultry species are carrying out in the Department.

Specific Admission Requirements

Applications to the undergraduate program are done to the Deanship of Faculty with the necessary documents, in the given dates. The candidates have to have a high school diploma and achievement certificate of OSYM general exam. The original and certified true copies of the documents are accepted. Military service and criminal record documents are declared by the candidate. The students have to make the exact registration by themselves. The acceptance and registrations of the students are done by the respective department in the principals of Presidency. The students have to enroll the courses of every term in the given dates of relevant term.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

There are no prerequisites for registration to Animal Science Department. But, the graduates of the vocational high schools of Agriculture, Animal Health and laboratory and everybody who loves animals could be more successful in Animal Science Departments.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The students' who will register to the Department of Animal Science graduate program are expected to be sufficient in subjects taught at high schools. The students' who will register to the graduate program are subject to the "Education and Examination Regulations of Ondokuz Mayis University". A total of 240 AKTS credits have to be completed in the education period.

Profile of The Programme

Department of Animal Science Program includes a 4-year period, consist from eight semesters. During this period, A total of 127 credit courses and internships (2nd and 3rd year) are required. In the program, after the basic courses and courses taken in other departments, mainly department programs are implemented. Department of Animal Science is an area that taught animal production techniques, genetics, breeding, feeding, recording process, consignment-administration. In department, bovine animals (cattle and buffalo), small animals (sheep and goat), poultry animals (meat and egg chickens, turkey, goose, duck, quail, pheasant, partridge) and like a bee livestock species can be studied. In this species, the transactions such as breeding-care-supply-management procedures are considered as quality assurance in the production of animal products.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

Students who have completed a Department of Animal Science program continue their professions as a Agricultural Engineer-Zootechinician. They can find an opportunity to work in areas related to Animal Production which is one of the main branches of agricultural production, Feed Industry, Food Sector, Industrial and Public Sector. They can easily find jobs especially, in Poultry sector which became an industry in all the units, in Cattle enterprises and in other areas. Also, they can benefit from all the rights provided by law who graduated with the title of Agricultural Engineer.

Access to Further Studies

Students, who have completed a Department of Animal Science program, can continue to the Animal Science Master Program and other masters programs. Possible participation postgraduate studies at the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The students are assessed at Midterm and at the end of the term. The success of the course is determined by the course grade. Course grade is determined by using midterm exams, practical works, homeworks and final examination. Course grade is calculated by summing the 40% of the midterm exam (or homeworks etc.) and 60% of the final exam. Fractions in the calculation of these ratios will be retained, but the pass mark under fractional numbers is rounded to the nearest whole.A 100-based system is used in evaluation of course success. Note conversion table of Higher Education Council is used in calculation of the equivalents of points in the 4-based system. Final examination note and success score should be 50 and 60, respectively in order to be successful in any course.

Graduation Requirements

Students who take minimum 60 points of 240 AKTS credit hours in 100 point grading system and their internship, will be eligible to receive a Bachelor's degree with Agricultural Engineer Title from Department of Animal Science.

Facilities

In the department, cattle, sheep, goat, chicken meat and eggs, quail, partridge, and the honeybee are produced and those products are marketed in University Campus. Those areas have a strong educational and research infrastructure, and experiences are offered both producers and technical staff. Also, feeding, management and evaluation supports recording can be achieved. Many feed and blood are analyzed in laboratory in the department. In Department of Biometry and Genetics services related to the evaluation and interpretation of the data are provided. Seminar Hall and Library services are available in the department.

Programme Outcomes

  1. Obtaining theoric and practical knowledge related to the animal production. Commenting the subjects related to the relevant study field with scientific approach.
  2. Obtaining basic knowledge and talents related to the genetic, breeding, biotechnology, raising, nutrition, product storage, health, analysis and interpretation of data in animal production.
  3. Ability of project preparing and also running a plant.
  4. Using therotical and practical knowledge in agriculture, especially in animal husbandry. Planning and conducting individual and inter-discipline studies for solving the problems
  5. Detects the problems in animal production, could analyze the data and comments on the results.
  6. Ability of developing occupational knowledge and abilities by using informatics technologies efficiently
  7. Consciousness of environment protection, occupational health and safety.
  8. Ability of doing regulations related to the production patterns of animal farms in the light of changing economical and social conditions.
  9. Has the necessary conscious on the subjects of environment protection, occupational health and safety; also has the conscious on legal awareness, entreprencurship and newfanglednes awareness.
  10. Aware of life-time learning materials and systems and could use them effectively.
  11. Fluency in a foreign language at the level enough to follow the subjects related to the animal husbandry.
  12. Consciousness of regulations related to the animal production and ethic rules, especially animal rights.
  13. Ability of oral and written communication with colleagues and different groups of people. Ability of developing an attitude towards to the life long learning.
