General Description

History

Agricultural Economics Department has continued the graduate and undergraduate level academic activities within Faculty of Agriculture since 1991. Department is an interdisciplinary and consist of farm management and agricultural policy and extension. There have been 5 academic staff, 2 lecturer and 7 research assistant at the department. The Master of Science program at Department of Agricultural Economics of University of Ondokuz Mayıs provides excellent preparation for students seeking professional positions in higher education, public service, and private industry. Each program is founded on a strong base in economic theory and quantitative research tools. This training is combined with coursework focusing on applications of theory and analytical methods to problem-solving, in any of the areas of specialization described below. Coursework usually is followed by a research experience that develops the student's ability to apply skills learned in the classroom. Our graduates receive superb training in their specialty areas, but perhaps more importantly, they learn how to solve social or business problems that cross specialty or even disciplinary lines.

Qualification Awarded

The Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Economics is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.

Specific Admission Requirements

High school diploma and to be placed through the Undergraduate Placement Exam-LYS (for more information, please visit web site of www.osym.gov.tr) are necessary for approval and registration. Within a quota, the program accepts foreign students taken the University Entrance Exam for foreign students made by Ondokuz Mayis University.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Equivalence adopted by the Council of Higher Education institutions can be admitted. High School graduates who are successful in vertical transfer exam to receive a bachelor's degree may be admitted to be able to continue their education. These students learn from vocational high school graduates by the department concerned before taking into account the lessons, and succeeded in determining the adjustment is made. An examination is being held for the level of foreign language and students may be exempted from these courses in the curriculum if they receive a passing grade.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students must take and pass all courses at minimun 120 credits (240 ECTS) including graduation thesis and internships that are explained by the Education and Exam Regulation of Ondokuz Mayis University.

Profile of The Programme

Program targets to educate the students and to enable them to produce solutions to the current economic problems of agricultural sector based on the knowledge, talents and competencies acquired during the program and use these solutions in their professional life and convey them to related individuals and institutions and improve themselves in line with changing conditions.To become an educational entity that will observe the scientific standards and objectivity in all activities at all times and maintain dialog continuously with the alumni and decision makers in agricultural sector to help find solutions to the important and current economic problems of the sector and renew itself in accordance with the requirements of changing time.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

Graduates take professional role in establishment of many public and private sector. Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Ministry of Development, National Productivity Centre, Export Development and Study Center, Undersecretariat of Treasury, Undersecretariat of Foreign Trade, Public and Private Banks, Agro-Industry Enterprises, Agricultural Cooperatives, Control and Certification Bodies, Consulting Firms in agriculture and agro-industry, appraisal firms and non-governmental organizations. Graduates also take place in national and international rural development projects that are very much promising.

Access to Further Studies

The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree and satisfactory scores about ALES or GRE, transcript and foreign languaeare eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

For each course assessment and grading is described in Syllabus in details. Grades are assessed through relative assessment system of the Education and Examination Regulation of Ondokuz Mayis University.

Graduation Requirements

Students must take and pass all necessary courses, graduation thesis and intermship listed in curriculum totaling 240 ECTS credits and reach a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2,0.

Facilities

Facilities for graduate study at Department of Agricultural Economics of University of Ondokuz Mayıs are outstanding. Graduate students receive office space at the Departments of Agricultural Economics. Classrooms, the Library, and computer facilities area all located at the department. This compact arrangement enables students to use their time efficiently and enhances opportunities for dialogue among faculty and graduate students. University of Ondokuz Mayıs and the Department of Agricultural Economics have very up-to-date computer facilities. The department has networked microcomputers located in offices throughout the department that are connected to the campus backbone by fiber optics. The campus network is connected to computers around the world via the Internet. Due to its size and the diversity of the student population, many opportunities for cultural and social enrichment abound at University of Ondokuz Mayıs. In addition, extracurricular activities are available in Ordu, Giresun, Trabzon, Sinop, Amasya, Çorum and Ankara.

Programme Outcomes

  1. Having basic theoretical and practical knowledge about agriculture and agriculture economics, know how to reach to the knowledge, where and when to use it.
  2. Know professional and ethical principles and legislations and adjust themselves in eye condense with them,
  3. Make effective contributions in a wide variety of situations that require applied economic and management analysis,
  4. Conduct agricultural project planning and policy formulation (project planning).
  5. Defines what is being done, predicts opportunities and reports problems.
  6. Interpret the reasons for the developments in the economy.
  7. Take personal responsibility concerning issues in agricultural economics,
  8. Continue MSc studies in agricultural economics (further studies).
  9. Show effective cooperation with others on projects in various learning and working environments,
  10. Use basic theoretical and applied information originally and systematically related to agricultural science and agricultural economics,
  11. Present positive attitude to lifelong learning activities.
  12. It prepares, applies, manages and monitors plans and projects for agricultural enterprises and rural areas taking environmental, economic and technical factors into account.
