General Description

History

The Department of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition in Agricultural Faculty of Ondokuz Mayıs University was established in 1991. The first 30 students of the department were enrolled in 1992-93 education term and graduated in 1996. The main objective of the department of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition is to graduate and post graduated soil scientists who are theoretically and practically well informed about fertility, management, conservation, and sustainability of soils. The department of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition offers undergraduate, master and doctoral graduate programs. Scientists stuffing in this department have produced projects to solve problems of country’s soil and plant product. Many scientists that are experts about different branch have successfully conducted nation and international projects. The department has some facilities such as soil physic, soil chemistry, soil biology, photometric analysis, plant analysis, GIS laboratories, soil and plant preparation rooms, 3 greenhouses and a seminar room. Results obtained from scientific research have been published in journal and they have also presented in some platform such as symposium, congress, workshops, and seminars and so on.

Qualification Awarded

The Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Engineering-Soil Science and Plant Nutrition ( first cycle in Agricultural Engineering/ Soil Science and Plant Nutrition) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.

Specific Admission Requirements

High school diploma and placement through a centralized national university placement examination, Undergraduate Placement Exam (LYS). Please visit www.osym.gov.tr for more information. There is a quota for international students who are admitted through selection by the university among the applicants

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Equivalence adopted by the Council of Higher Education institutions can be admitted. High School graduates who are successful in vertical transfer exam to receive a bachelor's degree may be admitted to be able to continue their education. These students learn from vocational high school graduates by the department concerned before taking into account the lessons, and succeeded in determining the adjustment is made. Higher education institutions in the recognition of prior non-formal and formal education at an early stage. Ondokuz Mayıs, and thus part of this situation is no exception. However, each semester examination is being held for the level of English language and foreign language education is recognized in this way before. Students may be exempted from these courses in the curriculum if they receive a passing grade.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Student must take and pass all courses at minimum 120 credits (240 ECTS) including graduation thesis and internships that are explained by the education and exam regulation of Ondokuz Mayıs University.

Profile of The Programme

To educate the students to enable them to produce solutions to the current soil science and fertility problems of agricultural sector based on the knowledge, talents and competencies acquired during the program and use these solutions in their professional life and convey them to related individuals and institutions and improve themselves in line with changing conditions.
To become an educational entity that will observe the scientific standards and objectivity in all activities at all times and maintain dialog continuously with the alumni and decision makers in agricultural sector to help find solutions to the important and current problems of the sector and renew itself in accordance with the requirements of changing time.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

Students graduated from the department may find a work in government organizations such as; Ministries of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Energy and Natural Resources, Public Works, and Ministry of Environment and Forestry, State Hydraulic Works, municipality, and non government organizations such as; cooperatives, trade chambers, fertilizer plants, laboratories, seed - pesticide - fertilizer delivery companies, soil water conservation and management.

Access to Further Studies

The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree and satisfactory scores about ALES or GRE transcript and foreign language are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programs at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

For each course assessment and grading is described in Syllabus in details. Grades are assessed through relative assessment system of the Education and Examination Regulation of Ondokuz Mayıs University.

Graduation Requirements

Students must take and pass all necessary courses, graduation thesis and internships listed in curriculum totaling 240 ECTS credits and reach a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2,0.

Programme Outcomes

  1. Having a sufficient background in Soil Science and Plant Nutrition with theoretical and practical knowledge supported by textbooks, practical tools and equipment, and other sources
  2. Having a skill to identify, define, and analysis of problems in Soil Science and Plant Nutrition
  3. Having a skill to use advanced theoretical and practical knowledge earned in Soil Science and Plant Nutrition to reply requirements
  4. Defining problems in Soil Science and Plant Nutrition, doing experiment, collecting data, analyzing, suggesting solutions according to results
  5. Carrying out a study in Soil Science and Plant Nutrition independently, taking a responsibility in individual or multiple disciplined studies, effective working skill
  6. In addition to knowledge earned in Soil science and Plant Nutrition, having a skill to search literature, use database, and other information sources
  7. Having a skill to make speaking and writing communication with correct and regular sentences in Soil Science and Plant Nutrition and effective use of a foreign language
  8. Having a skill to interpretation, evaluation and application of developments in Soil Science and Plant Nutrition, behaving according to ethical values in occupational field
  9. Design, conduct and carry out studies individually to solve problems affecting agricultural production by erosion, soil water pollution, soil salinity or alkalinity, etc.
