General Description

History

Ondokuz Mayis University Department of Civil Engineering belongs to Faculty of Engineering has started its education program in the academic year of 1993 – 1994. The aim of the program is to provide high quality education in undergraduate and graduation programs, carrying out the research work effectively, besides, collaborating with industrial partners and provide technical solutions efficiently.

Qualification Awarded

The Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering ( first cycle in Civil Engineering) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.

Specific Admission Requirements

Department of Civil Engineering of Engineering Faculty, admits students with higher education entrance exam determined by ÖSYM every year. In addition, it has opportunity to internal and external transfer between universities as arequirement of the application.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Students who were received in any formal education previously, in the case of application with transkript showing level of achievement, are exempted from the equivalent courses.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 60.0 out of 100.0 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).

Profile of The Programme

Civil Engineering Department is a division dealing with education and research on the design, construction and operation of any type of structure used in the daily life of human directly or indirectly. Civil engineering is a broad engineering discipline with a curriculum providing a strong foundation in mathematics and physics followed by in-depth education in structures, mechanics, geotechnical engineering and transportation. The main objective of the department is to provide the required knowledge for the rapidly developing science and technology, and to graduate engineers well educated parallel to the developing technology with the required knowledge and ability to transmit these knowledge to practice.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

Civil Engineering is a branch of engineering which deals with planning, project management, building and auditing of construction projects by gathering the knowledge of materials and techniques. Thus, the students who have the Bachelors degree from Civil Engineering are employed in many different fields of areas, such as planning, building and auditing of buildings, dams, airfields, bridges, roads, harbor and water structures, sewage systems, water transportation systems, tunnels, railways, light-rail and subway systems, etc.. in private and public companies.

Access to Further Studies

The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

In the Department of Civil Engineering, 1 midterm exam, 1 final exam and 1 repeat exam are applied in each academic semester. Except for exams, they intern institute or private organization which employ Civil engineer. This section has explained in course description and application form of releated course. For further information see the releated course in course plan section. Exam evaluations are carried out according to OMU Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations

Graduation Requirements

The students who have successfully completed all of the thought courses of the programme with 240 ECTS credits, achieved a CGPA of at least 60.0 out of 100.0 and had a pass grade from the Professional placement period and the report prepared therein are given Bachelor's Degree in CIVIL ENGINEERING

Facilities

The academic staff is composed of 8 full time professors (1 professors, 2 associate professors, 5 assistant professors). 6 research assistants are employed in the department. In addition to main building, there are one Laboratory which belong to the department.

Programme Outcomes

  1. Identify the broad context of civil engineering problems, including describing the problem conditions, identifying possible contributing factors, and generating alternative solution strategies
  2. Design the fundamental elements of civil engineering systems, system components and processes, with a good understanding of associated safety, quality, schedule and cost considerations
  3. Undertake laboratory, field and other data collection efforts using commonly used measurement techniques to support the study and solution of civil engineering problems
  4. Employ mathematics, science, and computing techniques in a systematic, comprehensive, and rigorous manner to support the study and solution of civil engineering problems
  5. Synthesize analysis results to provide constructive and creative engineering solutions that reflect social and environmental sensitivities
  6. Exhibit good teamwork skills and serve as effective members of multidisciplinary project teams
  7. Articulate and justify technical solutions to diverse audiences through oral, written, and graphical communication
  8. Understand the importance of professional and ethical responsibilities of civil engineers, and be aware of codes of conduct and other sources of guidance for professionally ethical decision-making
  9. Understand the constantly evolving nature of civil engineering design and practice, and recognize the need to stay abreast of the latest developments in the field
  10. Critically evaluate information related to the field, orient the learning and perform advanced studies independently
