General Description

History

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is one of ten departments of the Engineering Faculty of Ondokuz Mayis University. Each year 50 undergraduate students are admitted to the department. In the department, where a contemporary Materials Science and Engineering education is given, the undergraduate education is four years. By 2013, an approximately of 1800 students are being instructed by 4 assistant professors and 3 research assistants. The Materials Science and Engineering Department was founded in 1993 within the Engineering Faculty of Ondokuz Mayis University. In 2008, 31 students were enrolled and the first students graduated in 2012. The department has steadily developed academically since its foundation.

Qualification Awarded

The Bachelor's Degree in Materials Science and Engineering is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum, including a 60 work days industrial training period.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their education to obtain Bachelor’s degrees if they are successful in the selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Ondokuz Mayis University and hence of the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.

Students must successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS) with 60 work days of industrial training.

Profile of The Programme

In the Department, there are one subsection of Materials Science and Engineering. The program is designed to provide the fundamentals of contemporary materials science and engineering education. The first year of courses mainly consists of physics, chemistry, mathematics, computing and basic engineering courses, to bring the knowledge level of students with different backgrounds to the same level. The compulsory courses offered in second, third, and fourth years include Materials Science, Thermodynamics, Metallic, Ceramic and Polimer Materials. The third year and fourth year of curriculum include elective courses. These courses provide students a wide range of spectrum of materials science and engineering. Students spend totally 60 work days for summer practices in industry. The Graduation Project undertaken in the fourth year places an emphasis on the introduction to Research and Development and is submitted as a thesis.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

Materials Science and Engineering which is one of the oldest and most extensive areas of Engineering activities deals with all materials related technologies. Materials Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary field related to ceramic, metallic, polimer and composite materials. It has strong relationships with chemical and mechanical engineering and also with fundamental sciences of physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology. Materials science and engineering undertakes the production and improvement of goods which mankind needs with the responsibility of environmental effects. The “metallurgy art” which carry the manhood history from stone age to bronze age constitutes the base of the materials science and engineering. Today it has great contributions to contemporary civilization and it continues the developments in manufacturing under the name of materials science and engineering. Recently the importance of this field has increased in our country because the improvements on the manufacturing and chemistry industries and also the need novel materials for these industries. The applications about Materials science and engineering include automotive, white goods, aerospace, medical and biomedical devices.

Access to Further Studies

The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Students must attend classes, practices and examinations. Students' attendance is followed by the Instructor concerned. For almost all required and technical elective courses there are written examinations, in which most cases student must solve selected problems by calculation. At least one midterm examination, one final examination and one completion exam are given during each semester. Dates of all examinations are announced by the Department. In addition to midterm examinations and other work, students are required to take a final examination. Students are given a make-up examination for any examination which they have not attended if it is accepted by the Faculty Administrative Committee that there exist genuine and valid reasons for this. The semester grades are determined by adding forty percent of the midterm exam and sixty percent of the final exam grade. The type and contribution of the educational activities such as reports, homeworks, quizzes, seminar presentations or individual oral discussions, and performance in laboratory work on the assessment are announced by the instructor at the beginning of the semester. In Ondokuz Mayis University grade is evaluated by 100 grade system. The response to 4 grade system is calculated by grade conversion table provided by Turkish Council of Higher Education. Weighted grade average is obtained by dividing the sum of the product of course credits and the weight coefficients equivalent of the letter grades to the total credit.

Facilities

In the triangle of the university, industry and professional organizations, the department gives the students information about application and industry. At the same time always the updating has been made to track the new technologies. Currently the department has 240 m2 laboratory area in 3 sections with the capasity of 80 students. In these laboratories include devices as follows: molding device to handle the samples,cutting, grinding and polishing devices to prepare the surfaces of samples metallographically. Optic microscope to analyze the microstructure of all materials like metals and polimers. Centrifuge device to be used for preparing of the materials with mixing. The furnace with max 1300°C. Vibration mill for milling of ceramic materials. Shaking incubator used for the homogeneous solution with the effect of temperature and mixture. Permeability test device to measure the water permeability of concrete. Drying oven for the cast of polimers. The other drying oven for sterilization, heating, drying and heat treatment. Thermal conductivity analysis device to measure the thermal conductivity of construction materials. Magnetic stirrers and digital magnetic stirrer. Ultrasonic bath. Precision balance, cooler, vacuum pomp and pH meter.
