General Description

History

In 1992, OMU Chemical Engineering Department consisting of 4 main divisions such as thermodynamics, unit operations, chemical technologies and process and reactor design was founded within the Faculty of Engineering. From this departments, in the department of the basic operations there is one assistant professor, in the department of the chemical technologies there is one professor, one assistant professor and one assistant professor, in the department of the process and reactor design there is one associate professor, in the department of the thermodynamic there are two associate professor. Also, 5 research assistants are employed in the department. In the department started to its education program with 30 students in the academic year of 2011-2012, it is given basic engineering, basic science and professional courses. Since 2013-2014 academic year, the education program has been continued with 45 students who comes to our department each year. In addition, optional one-year English language program is being implemented in our department.

If the students fulfill all requirements to graduate, they deserve to take bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering Department.

The admission of the students to the program is described in detail in the education and examination regulation of 19 May University.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

The students educated by Ondokuz Mayıs University may be exempt from some courses according to particular regulations. Provided that The contents of the course at another institution have same contents in our course and the course content is approved by relevant Faculty / Institute / College director, the student may be exempted from this course.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The conditions of successfully complete all courses, average grade point at least 60 out of 100 and the 60-day internship are requirements for graduation.

Profile of The Programme

Chemical engineering is a major and versatile engineering disciplines interested in the improvement and application of processes in which the chemical structures, the energy contents or physical states of materials change, analyzing significant industrial, technological and environmental problems by using the sciences of mathematics, physics, biology and economics as well as the science of chemistry. A chemical engineer ensures that the raw materials transformed into usable products by utilizing the natural sciences and engineering. İt also plays a significant role in development and manufacturing of new materials. Maintaining the economic stability of many sectors such as pharmaceutical, petrochemical, plastics, paints, coatings and automotive requires knowledge and experience of a chemical engineer. Prevention of release of harmful substances into the environment and the treatment of contaminated waste water are some of the areas of chemical engineering applications. Industrial or lab-size design of the most economical and safest method for a manufacturing process is made by Chemical engineers. Establishment of the most appropriate system for the production and selection of the necessary equipment are among the tasks of chemical engineers.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

If the students fulfill all requirements to graduate, they deserve to take bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering Department. Chemical engineers are employed in many industries such as manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, design and construction, pulp and paper, petrochemistry, food processing, specialty chemicals, microelectronic, electronic and advanced materials, polymers, business services, biotechnology, environmental health and safety industries.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates upon successful completion of their B.Sc. program, having acquired a satisfactory achievement in the nationwide ALES exam can go on with MSc. and PhD. studies upon acceptance by the related graduate school of any university.

Facilities

Laboratories of Chemical engineering which is to be installed with the latest technological devices are divided into 4 main categories
– Chemistry Laboratory (the experiment setups of General Chemistry)
– Chemical Engineering Laboratory –I (The experimental setups of fluid mechanics, thermodynamic and physical chemistry)
– Chemical Engineering Laboratory –II (The experimental setups of heat and mass transfer and reaction engineering)
– Chemical Engineering Laboratory –III (The experimental setups of separation processes, process control and engineering technologies)

Programme Outcomes

  1. Ability to apply basic natural science, mathematics and engineering knowledge to chemical engineering problems.
