General Description


Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Dentistry, which was the only dental school in Black Sea Region, was esthablished in the year of 1993. Training programs and professional education begun with 32 students, 1 professor, 1 assocciate professors, 3 assistant professors and 14 research assistants at the same year. Research activities and public services were launched one year later in 1994.

As of today the number of academic staff is 174 including 108 researcher. The number of graduates is 545 including 125 at the PhD level.

Applicants should be graduated from high school and could get an acceptable grade from the examination run by ÖSYM. Applicants should also have the specialties described by Universty Senate.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage of Turkish Higher Education Counsel. However, exams of exemption are organized at the start of each academic year for the courses of English Language and Computer Skills. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The master’s degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all courses in the five-year curriculum including clinical internships (totally 300 ECTS) and have obtained a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) value of at least 2.00 on a 4.00 scale without any failing grades.

Profile of The Programme

The curriculum of our faculty has been designed and modified over the years to reflect the changing needs of the dental profession and public. The school's primary mission is patient centered. Our educational goal is to develop dental practitioners who are able to utilize the basic principles of human biology and human behaivour in conjunction with their technical skills in diagnosing, treating, and preventing oral disease. The education, which extends over a fiveyear period, consists of a series of didactic, laboratory, and clinical experiences.

The first year consists priarily of basic science and patient simulation courses. Organic Chemistry, Medical Biology and Genetics, Biophysics, Anatomy, and Biostatistics.

The second year basic science courses such as Histology, Anatomy, Microbiology and Physiology are concerned with the preclinical courses.

In the third year, students have a more enhanced clinical participation program with the pathology of the bodily systems. In the clincal experience course, they learn and practice procedures on each other, they assist with dental patients, and they assist sudents in the upper classes in the clinical group practices.

The fourth and fifth years of the program are intensely clinical. They include some day lecture courses, clinical rotations and many small group seminars/workshops, all of which are aimed at the development of greater understanding and enhanced skills in the area of patient care. The general clinic is divided into ten group practices which function in a manner similar to private practice.

Access to Further Studies

After getting ALES and YDS exams, the graduates having Bachelor's Degree in Dentistry may apply to PhD programmes in one of Dentistry discipline which offered by Graduate School of Health Sciences. They also could study to get a Mastership Degree run by Turkish Ministry of Health.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

2 mid terms and 1 final exam for yearly courses and 1 mid term 1 final for one semester courses.

Graduation Requirements

Sum of 50 % of the mid-term and 50 % of final exams should be a GPA of minimum 60 grade over 100 point system. Students should also submit the approved graduate thesis and have prepared all other documents related with graduation.

There are eight department in our faculty; Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Prothesis, Orthodontics, Pedodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Restorative Dentistry, Endodontics, and Periodontology. In total, 12 Professors, 27 Associate Professors, 24 Assistant Professors work and 502 graduate and 108 postgraduate students get education in these departments. All education needs of our students and researchers are faciliated with our Phantom Lab., Research Lab., Computer Lab., and a library. A reasuring treatment environment is created for our patients through renewed clinics. However, a new faculty building including modern and latest technology equipped clinics for every branch of dentistry is under construction.

Programme Outcomes

  1. To be able to develop the ability of creativeness and to be able to think in a critical way about Dentistry.
  2. To be aware of the principal know-how of clinical and social sciences (anatomy, histology and physiology, human pathology, chemistry, psychology etc) that is required as a Dentist.
  3. To be able to make a confidential diagnostic and treatment plan, to treat the oral and dental disease and to understand demographic aspects, prevention of those disease.
  4. To be able to use every necessary dentistry tool for oral health and treatment and to have adequate knowledge about all the materials that are being used at clinics.
  5. To be able to perform team work, in disciplinary and interdisciplinary, among the various branches of dentistry and medical branches
  6. To be able to follow the up-to-date scientific studies and developments about Dentistry and to be able to evaluate and implement the information that is gained.
  7. To be able to known the medicines which are directly and indirectly correlated to the dentistry practice and to understand the implications of pharmacological treatment of systemic pathologies concerning dental treatments
  8. To be able to perform the ventures and practices that retain the general health of the public and individuals foreground aside from dental treatments and to be able to perform protective dentistry applications at the clinic.
  9. To be able to know and to perform the procedures of infection control and to prevent cross contamination.
  10. To be able to educate patients appropriate and effective oral hygiene techniques, providing appropriate information and to obtain the informed consent to treatment.
  11. To be able to perform clinical studies that are appropriate to ethic and professional rules, respectful to patient rights and that holds the humanitary rights foreground.
