General Description

History

Ondokuz Mayis University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was established at 14.11.1995 with the 95/7515 numbered decision of the Council of Ministers. Our faculty was constituted of three sections and 19 departments due to the 26.06.2001 dated verdict sentenced at the steering committee meeting of Higher Education Council and department number reached 21 with the two new departments established with the 24.12.2004 dated decision of steering committee. Sections were elevated to five at the 26.02.2009 dated meeting of Higher Education Council.

Qualification Awarded

Veterinary Medicine is an integrated programme. Graduates which complete the program with all requirements and successfully perform internship are given “Diploma of Veterinary Medicine” degree. High Graduate Degree is given at the area of Veterinary Medicine.

Specific Admission Requirements

Certain registers of students placed in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine by Student Election and Placement Center (ÖSYM) are performed due to the determined principles of Higher Education Council. Students must do their certain registrations themselves. Acceptances and registrations of the students which deserved to attens faculty are carried out by the Deanery according to the Fundamentals designed by the Rectorship.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Acknowledgement of the previous formal education, vertical transfers, lateral transfers and transfers within the university are performed within the scope of “REGULATIONS CONCERNING THE TRANSFER IN HIGH EDUCATION ESTABLISHMENTS BETWEEN ASSOCIATE DEGREE AND GRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS, DOUBLE MAJOR BRANCHES, LATERAL BRANCHES AND CREDIT TRANSFERS BETWEEN ESTABLISHMENTS” described by the Higher Education Council. An exemption exam is performed in the beginning of each education year for the English language lesson included by the education plan of Faculty of Veterinary medicine. Students provide the expected proficiency fort his lesson gets the right to attend the exemption exam. Students whom are successful in the exam are exempted from the related lesson.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Having a high school degree, achieving a score higher than the determined baseline score for that year at the placing exam to Higher Education Foundations, not possessing physical and psychological health problems and documentation of this with a committee report.

Profile of The Programme

Lessons are performed in sessions in the Faculty of Veterinary medicine. Therefore lesson plan was constituted for half years. Veterinary Medicine program includes Basic Sciences, Preclinical, Animal Husbandary and Animal Feeding, Clinical Sciences and Food Hygiene and Technology sections.
Education program of Faculty of Veterinary medicine is featured with aiming to provide contemporary knowledge and speciliazed skills regarding veterinary medicine and is open to innovation, encourages excellence in education, enables student centered and systematic approach in problem description and solution, determination and rewarding of success and continuous evaluation and back feeding.
This program not only provides medical knowledge and skills for veterinary medicine art and science, but also aims to graduate veterinary surgeons whom dedicate themselves to their missions, nation and humanity. More than 70 tutor, clinician and reseachers takes part at the faculty.In the faculty, 5 year Veterinary Medicine education is given to more than 480 students nearby doctorate education provided subjected to the Institute of Health Sciences.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

Students who successfully complete 5 years education of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine graduate with the title of “Doctor of Veterinary Medicine”. Graduated students find working opportunity at animal health and its industrial service fields, government offices or institutions of Ministy of Food, Agriculture and Animal Husbandary, Ministy of Enviroment and Forestry, Ministry of Health, local adminstrations, Turkish Army Forces, feed processing industry, poultry sector, meat and milk processing industry, veterinary drug industry, private clinics and animal hospitals, Turkish Jokey Club, and at animal production farms of zoo, Graduated students may also do graduate studies (MSc and PhD) at the various departments of universities and get the rights working as academicians..

Access to Further Studies

Candidates who have completed undergaduate program can strat gradute studies if they meet the requirements for ALES and foreign language.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Exams are conducted as written, oral, written-oral and/or practical. Besides of wrriten exams, responsible academician prepare other type of exams and give poposals to the academic committee of department, Decission of academic committee are announced to students.Oral exams are done by authorized academician. Students can be taken maximum two exams in a day for each semester, however, this requirement doesn’t apply to make-up exams

Graduation Requirements

Students are graduated from Faculty of Veterinary Medicine with holding MSc degree after completing 5 years (10 semesters) of education , taking minimum 200 credits (300 AKTS) courses and finishing the 20 working days summer internships at the end of 6th and 8th semesters.

Achievement grade is sum of 40 % of midterm exam and 60 % of final exam or 60 % of make-up exam.In order to be considered successful from the course, getting the grade minumum 50 from midterm and 60 from final or make-up examas are compulsory.

Facilities

Education, research and clinical activities are continuing in our faculty with 5 divisions and 21 departments.
We currrently have 14 research and 3 students laboratories.
Our animal hospital is serving in a beter condition.
Technological infrastructure in terms of treatment and preventive health care services in our clinics (X-ray, ultrasound, ECG, etc.) has been completed.


Services Offered:

Educational services: Classrooms are located in different places since our faculty doesn’t have its own building, Our students use classrooms and labs in administrative building and in medical school building. Final year students are using the classrooms in new animal hospital.
Department of Virology, Food Hygiene and Technology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Animal Nutrition and Nutritional Diseases have master students. Parasitology, Pharmacology, Food Hygiene and Technology, Internal medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Anatomy, Reproduction and Artificial Insemination, Animal Nutrition and Nutritional Diseases, Departments of Pathology have Ph. D students.

Education, research and clinical services are provided by the coordination of 5 divisions and 21 departments. Additionally researchers are supported for preparing EU projects and regional projects.

Laboratory Services:besides students education, our faculty provides laboratory services for patients in the faculty clinics, private clinics, and farmers for diagnosis of animal diseases. For this purpose, serological and molecular methods (PCR, ELISA, etc.) are routinely performed by the department of virology, microbiology, parasitology, pathology, food hygiene and technology, aquaculture and diseases, animal nutrition and nutritional diseases, pharmacology and toxicology.

Treatment Services:besides undergraduate education of students in animal hospital, diagnosis and treatment services are provided by the department of Surgery, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Reproduction and Artificial Insemination.
Besides treatment of animals, all kinds of consultancy services are also provided in accordance with the demands of animal breeders, producers, animal lovers and industrialists.

We have 4 modern operating rooms, 2 Radiology Units, 6 Patient Care Rooms, 1 Small Animal Vaccination Room, 2 Intensive Care Cabinets, 2 Ultrasounds and 1 ECG in our animal hospital.

Programme Outcomes

  1. According to animal species; knows the organism's structure, function, care, feeding and breeding methods.
  2. Knows animal disease, diagnosis and treatment methods.
  3. Acquires necessary information about planning, production, marketing,auditing and policy issues in the livestock enterprises.
  4. Diagnoses animal diseases clinically, uses diagnostic methods for this purpose, when needed collects diagnostic materials and sents to relevant laboratories, treats diseases diagnosed by using all known methods of medical science.
  5. Shows required diligence in the protection of public health and the environment during the animal production and medical practice.
  6. Takes necessary technical and health measures in the stagesfrom production to consumption of the animal originated foods containing animal originated compounds.
  7. Can perform alone all or a part of the profession of veterinary medicine, fulfills the obligations of the profession.
  8. Learns a foreign language and how to use information technology to continuously follow professional developments and stays up date.
  9. Knows the ways of efficient communication with relevant stakeholders in the implementation of medical profession, participates in professional organizations and social activities.
  10. Conceptualizes veterinary services - related events and phenomena; investigates scientific techniques and methods, interprets the results, envisages methods and analysis related to possible problems and produces alternative solutions according to data obtained.
  11. For the needs of countries and regions plans and produces livestock and animal health related national and international projects and makes economis and statistical evaluation of possible outcomes of these projects.
  12. Follows national and international legislations related to veterinary mediicne profession and implements.
