General Description

History

The Department of Aerospace Engineering was established within the Faculty of Aeronautics And Astronautics and it has begun to accept students at the undergraduate level since 2014-2015 academic year.

Qualification Awarded

If the students fulfill all requirements to graduate, they deserve to take the Bachelor's Degree in Aerospace Engineering Department.

Specific Admission Requirements

The general requirements explained in web site of Student/Student Affairs. Admission to the program is carried out according to the performance displayed in the nationwide selection and placement examinations organised by the national “Measuring, Selection and Placement Center” OSYM.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfers can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by the Council of Higher Education. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated.

Students must successfully pass all the courses on programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS) with 60 work days of summer practice.

Profile of The Programme

A Bachelor’s Degree (B.Sc.) program is offered with 147 credits -which include 12 credits for laboratory and application sessions. The program also closely follows European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) requirements, with 240 credits. The first two years of the B.Sc. program covers mandatory science and engineering courses, and main aerospace classes and elective courses are offered during the last two and half years. There are also three 20-working day summer practice requirements -which can be conducted in governmental institutions or in private sector. Students who are not proficient in English must attend one or two semesters of mandatory English Language Preparatory class.

Aerospace engineering program offers a career for the students interesting in; structure and materials, aerodynamics, avionics, propulsion, aircraft and spacecraft design, system performance, dynamics and control, system engineering and related areas. The aim of aerospace engineering is to design, development, analysis, test and fabricate aircraft and spacecraft systems for civil and military purposes.

Aerospace engineering is a discipline with a curriculum offering a sound understanding of mathematics and physics, which will be essential in related aerospace engineering areas. The main objective of the Programme is to gain students technical and scientific skills such as: high proficiency in research methodology, experiments and data collection; excellent analytical and logical-thinking skills; excellent knowledge of mathematics and physics; interdisciplinary skills, including expertise in mechanics and engineering; ability to identify and tackle complex technical challenges. These key skills will be afterwards crucial for graduates to find qualified jobs in national, international aerospace institutions and in academia.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

Some job opportunities can be found in national government institutions and in private sector as well as in international organizations such as; Turkish Airlines, Turkish Airforce and private airlines maintenance centres; TUSAŞ-TEI and TAI, ROKETSAN, HAVELSAN aerospace and military companies; TUBITAK-MAM and SAGE research centres; alternative (wind) energy companies; institutions like NASA, ESA, AIRBUS, BOEING, FAA and etc. They can also pursue an academic career at related national/international universities and research centres.

Access to Further Studies

The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and/or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The examinations, assessments and grading for the courses in the program are regulated by the official document entitled "Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Eğitim-Öğretim Yönetmeliği (Qualification Requirements and Regulations)" authorised by the University Senate.

Programme Outcomes

  1. Matematik, fen bilimleri ve ilgili mühendislik disiplinine özgü konularda yeterli bilgi birikimi; bu alanlardaki kuramsal ve uygulamalı bilgileri, karmaşık mühendislik problemlerinde kullanabilme becerisi.
  2. Karmaşık mühendislik problemlerini saptama, tanımlama, formüle etme ve çözme becerisi; bu amaçla uygun analiz ve modelleme yöntemlerini seçme ve uygulama becerisi.
  3. Karmaşık bir sistemi, sureci, cihazı veya ürünü gerçekçi kısıtlar ve koşullar altında, belirli gereksinimleri karşılayacak şekilde tasarlama becerisi; bu amaçla modern tasarım yöntemlerini uygulama becerisi.
  4. Mühendislik uygulamalarında karşılaşılan karmaşık problemlerin analizi ve çözümü için gerekli olan modern teknik ve araçları geliştirme, seçme ve kullanma becerisi; bilişim teknolojilerini etkin bir şekilde kullanma becerisi.
  5. Karmaşık mühendislik problemlerinin veya disipline özgü araştırma konularının incelenmesi için deney tasarlama, deney yapma, veri toplama, sonuçları analiz etme ve yorumlama becerisi.
  6. Disiplin içi ve çok disiplinli takımlarda etkin biçimde çalışabilme becerisi; bireysel çalışma becerisi.
  7. Türkçe sözlü̈ ve yazılı etkin iletişim kurma becerisi; en az bir yabancı dil bilgisi; etkin rapor yazma ve yazılı raporları anlama, tasarım ve üretim raporları hazırlayabilme, etkin sunum yapabilme, açık ve anlaşılır talimat verme ve alma becerisi.
  8. Yaşam boyu öğrenmenin gerekliliği bilinci; bilgiye erişebilme, bilim ve teknolojideki gelişmeleri izleme ve kendini sürekli yenileme becerisi.
  9. Etik ilkelerine uygun davranma, mesleki ve etik sorumluluk bilinci; mühendislik uygulamalarında kullanılan standartlar hakkında bilgi.
