General Description

History

Department of Meteorology, established within the Faculty of Aeronautics and Space Sciences, began to admit undergraduate students in the fall semester of the 2015-2016 academic year. As of 2017-2018 academic year, there is no graduate program.

Qualification Awarded

Graduates of the undergraduate program are granted the title "Meteorological Engineer".

Specific Admission Requirements

Admittance, examination and grading are performed according to the Higher Education Law and to the university regulations set thereupon.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Students of the Ondokuz Mayis University may be exempt from some courses according to the relevant regulations. Exemption from any course that was previously taken from another institution is only possible if its content is sufficiently similar to the corresponding course offered at the department. This is subject to the approval of the faculty.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

In order to graduate from the undergraduate program, all courses of the curriculum (240 ECTS credit points) should be taken and passed. This includes three summer practices lasting 60 workdays in total.

Profile of The Programme

The curriculum of the first year consists of physics, chemistry, mathematics, introductory atmospheric science and two computer programming courses; all of which are designed to train students of different backgrounds to a similar degree of knowledge. In the second, third and fourth years; in addition to core courses such as Atmospheric Thermodynamics, Dynamic and Synoptic Meteorology, and Numerical Weather Prediction; there are mandatory courses such as Computer Applications in Meteorology and Data Analysis, where students improve their programming skills.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

Graduates can be employed by governmental institutions such as Turkish State Meteorological Service( TSMS), State Hydraulic Works (DSİ), Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) , Ministry of Environment amd Urbanization, Ministry of Forestry and Water, renewable energy and construction companies, disaster management institutions, research and development centers, World Meteorological Organization (WMO), European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), and the leading atmospheric research centers of USA (NCAR and NASA). They can also pursue an academic career at related national/international universities and research centres.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates holding a bachelor's degree with sufficient graduate program admittance examination (ALES) scores and a sufficient knowledge of English are eligible to apply to graduate programs at national level and/or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

Graduation Requirements

Students must successfully pass all the courses in the undergraduate curriculum (240 ECTS in total) with 60 workdays of summer practice.

Programme Outcomes

  1. Ability to apply maths, basic science and engineering knowledge in the field
  2. Ability to use various computer operating systems -Unix-based ones in particular-, to build computer programs/algorithms by coding in popular languages in meteorology discipline, and to instrumentalize them for professional needs without help
  3. Ability to process, convert, and analyse meteorology, hydrology, oceanography and climate datasets; visualise them on graphs and charts, and interpret
  4. Knowledge of and ability to use both in-situ and remote sensing measuring instruments and observation tools in meteorology
  5. Ability to do nowcasting using actual observations, meteorological charts, thermodynamic diagrams, radar/satellite products and lightning detection systems
  6. Knowledge of basics of numerical weather prediction, ability to run a weather prediction model producing short-mid range forecasts, and to forecast the weather using its output
  7. Knowledge of the sky in general, cloud types, winds, geographical conditions and climatological characteristics of a spesific location, and ability to use all these practical information in weather forecasting and risk analysis
  8. Ability to make long term (monthly / seasonal) climate forecasts for sectors such as agriculture and energy by making use of using climate means and monthly / seasonal forecasting products; ability to evaluate the natural variability of climate
  9. Ability to use weather / climate forecasts and climate change related information, to guide decision-making authorities and general public by addressing climate change related disasters in terms of disaster potential / prevention; to create awareness on harmful meteorological events, climate change, renewable energy and sustainable development
  10. Ability to work within intra-discipline and multi-disciplinary teams, and also to work in collaboration with these teams
  11. To have professional / ethical responsibility and quality consciousness, knowledge on science / engineering standards
  12. Being aware of the necessity of lifelong learning and ability to sustain it
  13. Ability to communicate efficiently both verbally and and in writing using Turkish language, to know at least one foreign language, to write effective reports and understand written reports, to make effective presentations, ability to give and receive clear and understandable instructions
  14. Knowledge about business life, such as project management, risk management, solution generation, change management, entrepreneurship, reformism and innovation
