General Description

History

Microbiology department was found at the end of the year of 2003. First lisans degree programme was executed between 2003 and 2013 and still continue. Master's degree programme has recently been continuing during the period of spring term of 2013.

Qualification Awarded

The programme is authorized when the Msc student had qualifications by the time the Msc programme was completed successfully at the end of the course.

Specific Admission Requirements

The people who tend to attend to the master of science degree programme should have the outlined requirements:
1- graduted from veterinary faculties or
2- people who graduated from other faculties other than health science should get an accomodation programme lasting for a year. After then people can get into the Msc programme.
3- Nominee should also have the certificate showing capability of his/her English language (KPDS, UDS or equivalent degree)
4- Applications are accepted according to the regulations of master of science degree programme of 19 Mayıs University.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Students horizontally transferred to Msc programme of Microbiology can be accepted free from some of the classes they got previously based on the regulations of the Institute. These regulations will be valid if the students apply within the period of declaration and after confirmation by the board.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students attend the Msc programme have follow the regulations below:
1- One should get credit at least a total of 24 hours (equivalent to 60 ECTS) within two semesters and conduct a seminar within the same period. 2- should prepare a thesis and should be successful defending his/her thesis in front of the board.

Profile of The Programme

The person who get the Msc certificate have the required qualications in the field of microbiology, infections and immunology. This programme includes obligatory and optional courses in microbiology, immunology and poultry diseases. Programme includes both theoritical and practical courses. The studies performing in our research lab are basically based on the molecular, serological, cell cultural and bacteriological methods . Our research projects are mainly to develop new diagnostic methods based on the diagnosis of zoonotic and economically important diseases, molecular epidemiological studies and different kinds of immunological and molecular studies on mastitis.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

People finish this programme can be employed outlined below departments or places:
Veterinary control and research centers of the ministry of agriculture
Prevention and control sections of the ministry of agriculture and health
diagnostic labs of different commercial companies
conducting research and teaching facilities at universities
And, they also work different commercial companies producing different diagnostics and/or vaccine or biological material as well as they can be employed as an authorized body or employee in vaccine control units.




Access to Further Studies

People who finish this Msc programme succesfully can be adapted to phD programme providing that having suffiecient degree from the exams of ALES that is necessary for starting new programme for introduction of making phD and from one of the exams (UDS, KPDS, YDS, TOEFL or equal to these ) improving English competence and also get enough grade held by the board of Microbiology. All grades are calculated by adding of 3 test results.

Facilities

Department of microbiology labs have organized two main facilities mainly majoring in diagnosis and research facilities. Bacteriological, molecular biological, cell cultural and serological studies are performed in this reserach facility unit. Other unit of lab is consist of lyofilization section. ELISA, electrophoresis, Western Blotting and protein purification as well as other serological tests are performed at serology section of lab. In the routine lab, detection of some diseases of animals are performed in brought to animal hospital.

Programme Outcomes

  1. This program has been aimed to improve the ability of interpretation based on the development of the infrastructure of the science regarding with microbiology and gaining the self-research development of the students evaluating the instances that are commonly dealing with widening perspectives.
  2. Planning of the topics directed to industry that would be the main subject on the patent as well as fundamental researches, matching up the problems of the industry with researches made at universities and cooperation with both industry and university will provide an importance role in finding a solution in the research area..
  3. Solving the problems encountered in the microbiology that is shared with veterinary practioners those are worked at Agriculture of Ministry and privite sector and self-employment, finding a key on the problems existing
  4. Have the ability of aforementioned abilities: preparing culture media that is used for bacterial growth, staining procedures and biochemimical tests for the purpose of identification of the bacteria and performing and evaluation of the antibiotic sensitivity tests, and also determining the bacterial colony count in the liquid and solid media
  5. Have the knowledge of the information to isolate the bacteria from the diseased material, and identify the isolates using serological techniques, and to be able to identify the ethiological agents and /or diagnose the disease with phage susceptibility tests and animal inoculations.
  6. Preperation of whole cell and sonicated antigens for the detection of infectious diseases by serological means, titration of these antigens, preperation and titration of immun and hyperimmunsera for positive control sera, and having the ability of practicing and interpretation of serological techniques for indirect diagnosis of infectious diseases
  7. Having the ability of practicing the diagnosis of noninfectious and bacterial, viral, mycotic and parasitic infectious diseases of poultry directed to clinical manifestations, necropsy findings and laboratory diagnosis
  8. Having the ability of preperation of in vivo and in vitro culture media for bacterial and viral culture, and also being able to perform sterilisation and disenfection of the materials used in laboratory.
  9. To perform typing of bacteria by molecular techniques
  10. the theoretical knowledge that is gained by experience should be used to diagnose the disease and identify the causative agent
  11. To get the knowledge of accessing web adress and reference centers in his/her area of expertise.
  12. To acquire the ability to organize seminars, panels and congress in regarding his masters’field.
  13. Preperation of inoculum for the isolation of infectious agents from clinically suspected materials and identify the agents serologically that are responsible for disease, and to have the ability of performing phage susceptibility and animal inoculation tests for diagnosis of diseases and the causative agents
  14. One should be involved on research and production activities.
  15. The MS student should be able to isolate from the material, and detect the susceptible antibiotics and calculate the bacterial colony in culture in laboratory conditions.
  16. Sharing information with the associations, corporations and related branches concerning his/her area of expertise
  17. To have the ability of review the literature by oneself.
  18. One should have produce eradication models against infectious diseases.
  19. Interpretation of immunological responses in animals
  20. To acquire the molecular typing methods of bacterial strains
  21. The production of molecular diagnostic reagents.
  22. Interpretition of antibiotic resistance mechanism and accordingly the outcomes of this resistance in bacterial infections.
  23. To acquire the ability of preperation of the bacterial vaccines that are inactivated and know preparation of the attenuated vaccines
  24. The production and detection of antigens for the keep track of vaccine efficacy
  25. Planning and production of vaccine strategy against infectious disease of animal for prophylaxia.
  26. Using the experience that gained in master’s degree one should illuminate the society and give information about causes of the problems and should suggest proposals for solving the problems and organize a meeting locally or internationally regarding with the society and the animal health that they have in the field of veterinary microbiology and immunology in corresponding boards.
  27. Have the ability of performing epidemiological survey in national and local perspective
  28. Pathogenicity, toxigenicity and immunogenicity tests should be practicised and vaccine efficacy should be followed in laboratory animals
