General Description

History

Orthodontics doctorate program was opened at 1994 within Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Dentistry and the postgraduate education was started at 1995 February. The education instruction, orthodontic treatment and scientific research activities have been continued by 2 professors, 2 associate professor, 2 assistant professors and 1 lecturer. The doctorate programs in department of orthodontics have been applied with the coordination of the Institute of Health Sciences.

Ph.D. degree was awarded following to the Orthodontics doctorate program.

Specific Admission Requirements

Applicants should be graduated from Dental Faculty and had ALES and YDS point grades over the required threshold level.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

A candidate from another faculty's orthodontic department may enroll for the Ph.D. course in our faculty and after evaluation his/her previous credits could be accepted.

The lectures should be taken and a Ph.D. thesis should be prepared for a spesific area related with orthodontics.

Profile of The Programme


The main aim of our department is, to get orthodontists in time that define the anomalies, prevent the orthodontic anomalies in clinical practice, and stop the progress of the anomalies and treat the present anomalies. Another goal of the department is to be an orthodontics clinic that have been applied the most current and effective treatments and have been done diagnosis and treatment plans with the benefit of last technologic developments. During the time to reach this object, to be a department that have authoritatively about the education and science all in the country and to be department that has been preferred for doctorate and specialist training.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates with a PhD diploma could seek academic career or could work in the Dental Hospitals whether belong the Ministry of Healty of private companies.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

For lectures 1 mid-term and one final exam is compulsory. Candidate must have the necessary grade from these exams. At the end of the sceond year (4 th term) candidates should get a general proficiency exam which shows the ability of the student to work towards the PhD degree.

Graduation Requirements

The lectures should be taken and a Ph.D. thesis should be prepared for a spesific area related with orthodontics.

Facilities

The doctorate education and applications have been applied in the clinic that has 22 patient unit capacities. An archive room and a sterilization unit are present in the clinic and also an orthodontics laboratory that made the removable and fixed functional appliances is located on the ground floor of the faculty. The instruments, equipments and materials are also available which are necessary for orthodontic records, plans and treatments.


Programme Outcomes

  1. Define craniofacial development and anomalies, normal growth changes of the body in general and craniofacial complex in particular with reference to growth of the jaws, eruption of the teeth, and development of normal occlusion.
  2. Graduates must diagnosis and treat orthodontic anomalies
  3. Graduates must treat orthodontic anomalies alone or with other specialists
  4. Graduates must follow technological developments for orthodontics and update their knowledge
  5. Communucate with other specialists
  6. Apply interceptive and corrective orthodontic treatments and clinical techniques used for orthodontic anomalies.
