Ondokuz Mayıs University is a state university founded in 1975 in Samsun. The university bears its name from the date 19 May 1919 when Atatürk arrived in Samsun in order to start the War of Independence. 

With its 58.294 students and 2340 academic staff, Ondokuz Mayıs University is one of the leading universities in Turkey in terms of staff quality and number, academic and social facilities and infrastructure. Regarding accommodation, transportation, sports facilities, cultural and social environment, our university provides a happy and productive environment to both students and staff.

Our university consists of 20 faculties (Aeronautics and Astronautics, Agriculture, Architecture, Business Administration, Communication, Dentistry,  Divinity, Economics And Administrative Sciences, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences,  Law, Medicine, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Science and Letters, Tourism, Health Sciences, Sports Sciences, Veterinary Medicine); 1 conservatoire; 2 schools (School of Civil Aviation, and School of Foreign Languages); 13 vocational schools which give two-year education (Alaçam, Bafra, Ballıca, Bafra Tourism, Çarşamba Mercantile Exchange, Havza, Justice, Kavak, Health Services, Samsun, Terme, Vezirköprü, Yeşilyurt Demir-Çelik); and 5 graduate schools (Educational Sciences, Fine Arts, Health Sciences, Natural Sciences,  and Social Sciences).

Internationalisation is one of the main objectives of our university, in order to develop and being recognised in the international platforms. Being aware of the importance of creating knowledge and technology, as well as increasing the international employability of the graduates, continuous development of education and research quality is at utmost importance. In addition to creating an international campus where international communication and interaction are at top level, OMU also encourages the students and staff to experience international cultures and educational environments.  

Bologna Process acted as an accelerator for establishing an understanding of quality assurance and sustainable development. The Bologna Process does not aim to harmonise national educational systems but rather to provide tools to connect them. The intention is to allow the diversity of national systems and universities to be maintained while the European Higher Education Area improves transparency between higher education systems, as well as implements tools to facilitate recognition of degrees and academic qualifications, mobility, and exchanges between institutions.

Within the framework of the Bologna Process, our university makes continuous effort both on developing the academic programmes in order to increase the quality of education and research and to increase the quantity and quality of the international mobility. Every year, increasing number of incoming and outgoing students benefits the international mobility programmes like Erasmus and Mevlana.

In addition to the mobility programmes, academic cooperation protocols are another way to increase the international cooperation.  Currently, our University has 274 Erasmus+ program countries agreements, 115 Erasmus+ partner countries agreements, 73 Mevlana agreements, and 89 international collaboration protocols.

The number of international degree students studying at OMU is increasing every year as an indicator of our objective of creating an international campus. OMU is one of the leading universities in Turkey with approximately 3600 international students from 104 countries.


Ondokuz Mayıs University, in order to standardize and facilitate the application process of international students at OMU, started to hold the International Student Entrance Examination (OMU-YÖS) in the 2011-2012 Academic Year, and thus broke new ground in Turkey. To increase the accessibility of the examination, OMU-YOS was held in a total of 10 examination centres located in 5 different countries (Turkey, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Iran, and Kyrgyzstan) in the 2012-2013 Academic Year; and 706 candidates took the examination. The numbers have increased to 26 exam centres in 17 countries with 3006 candidates in the 2013-2014 Academic year; 33 exam centres in 19 countries with 4248 candidates in the 2014-2015 Academic year; 33 exam centres in 21 countries with 4257 candidates in the 2015-2016 Academic year; 28 exam centres in 18 countries with 4544 candidates in the 2016-2017 Academic year; and 27 exam centres in 11 countries with 3880 candidates in the 2017-2018 Academic year. OMU-YOS results are accepted as an admission criterion for international students by a total of 119 universities in Turkey, of which 72 are state and 47 are foundation universities.
